Neighborhood Info

Note to visitors:
Like all cities, a basic level of precaution is advised of any visitor to Savannah (especially at night). On weekend nights there is a cab stand in City Market, and you will find the city is very easy to get around.

Savannah's Historic Districts

Savannah is divided into several historic districts recognized by the National Register of Historic Places, making it one of the largest historic districts around.

Thomas Square Streetcar Historic District

The neighborhood surrounding the Barnard Suite is the Thomas Square Streetcar Historic District. This area bounded by Anderson (N), Montgomery (W), Victory (S) and E Broad (E) was designated a National Register Historic District in 1977.

Thomas Square is full of Folk Victorian, Queen Anne, Craftsman, and Italianate architecture. The 1888 extension of the Trolley line south along Whitaker was the beginning for this section of town. Long neglected, the Thomas Square area has had a boom of restoration and revitalization in the past 10 years.

The nearby Starland area (named for the long-gone Starland Dairy) has become a local center for art galleries. There are a lot of old victorians, antique shops, restaurants and other small businesses. Like the rest of the neighborhood this area is rapidly being renovated and restored to its original character.

Our corner of Barnard and 35th Streets is surrounded by a wide variety of neighbors. From SCAD students to residents of 60 years or more, this area is thriving with the energy of a city. All the same, the slower pace of Savannah lends a truly Southern quality unique to Savannah.

Some area favorites you should check out:
Elizabeth's on 37th | Back in the Day Bakery
Desoto Row Gallery | SOL Restaurant | Starland Cafe
American Legion Bar

Victorian District

The Waldburg Apartment is located in the Victorian District, which is bounded by Gwinnett (N), Montgomery W), Anderson (S), and Broad (E). The Victorian District was designated a National Register Historic District in 1974.

As Savannah's population began to grow in the mid-1800s, homes began to be built south of Gaston and the border of the original planned city - the Victorian District was born. With countless examples of Queen Anne and Late Victorian architecture, Forsyth Park and plenty of tree-lined streets, the Victorian District is a great example of Savannah's charm.

With Forsyth Park in sight of the front porch and the landmark district just 2 blocks away, this is an ideal location for exploring the city.

Some area favorites you should check out:

Brighter Day Natural Foods | Leoci's Trattoria
Pinkie Masters Bar | Venus deMilo Bar
